Bedwas kept up their impressive form recording an emphatic eight try demolition of Ebbw Vale.

Bedwas thought they had taken an early lead but Lewis Evans’ try was chalked off by the referee for crossing but the home faithful didn’t have to wait long for the opening score. Morgan Allen crashed through some poor defence before cantering twenty metres to cross under the posts; Lewis Evans successfully converting.

Ebbw barely had time to get their breath back as Mathew John finished off a flowing move to cross near the left hand touchline, Evans again notching the extras.

Bedwas continued to dominate territory. Ross Wardle did brilliantly to offload to Mike Callow who burst through down the middle for the third try of the day, Evans’ conversion put his side 21-0 up with twenty minutes played.

Ebbw struggled to make any headway and it wasn’t surprising that with around 30 minutes elapsed that Bedwas increased their lead with Mathew John running in for his second try of the day, Evans maintaining his 100% record with the boot.

With half time approaching a close range scrum saw the ball squirt out and Tom Rowlands reacted quickest to pounce on the loose ball to score a try. Evans’ successful conversion putting his side 35-0 ahead.

There was still time for Ebbw Vale to mount a last ditch offensive on the Bedwas line which gained its reward as backrower Kristian Parker was driven for a try which went unconverted.

With the wind at their backs for the second half Ebbw started the second half strongly and for the first twenty minutes pinned Bedwas in their own half. However their territorial possession did not bring any reward, even when Bedwas lost scrum half Tom Rowlands to the sin bin as they could not find their way past a strong Bedwas defence.

Bedwas made multiple replacements between 55 and 70 minutes and as hoped for fresh legs gave Bedwas the impetus to put replacement scrum half Nicky Griffiths in for a try converted by replacement outside half Steffan Jones. This was followed almost immediately by the seventh try of the day as Alun Rees crossed for a further try. Jones’ conversion being unsuccessful.

Just before the final whistle and with Ebbw fading Bedwas added a eighth try as Alun Rees added his second if the day, Jones’ conversion made it 54 points to 8 and a more than satisfactory afternoon’s work for the men in black.

There now follows a three week break before league rugby gets back underway as the British and Irish Cup takes preference after which Bedwas host Pontypridd RFC at the Bridgefield on 29th October.

Man of the match sponsored by Casa Mia Restaurant of Caerphilly was awarded to number 8 Morgan Allen.
