Local WRU Hub Officer Shares Successes Over the Last Year

Bedwas RFC was pleased to hear the latest report from local WRU Hub Officer, Jon Hughes (pictured below).

Based at Bedwas High School, Hughes has been liaising with Bedwas RFC on developing its Mini & Juniors section, in addition to his work last year with the Youth side and latterly the 2nd XV.

Recent successes in his work as the local secondary school’s Hub Officer have included giving every child in Years 7-11 opportunities to participate in rugby, staging a range of extra curricular fixtures, entering a 7s team in the Urdu 7s tournament, working on a primary schools rugby programme and seeing some of his pupils earn representative honours with the Dragons, Rhymney Valleys Schools and Welsh Academicals.

Hughes has also been able to get pupils involved with club rugby at both Bedwas RFC and Machen RFC as a result of his work. Further to this, he has been able to arrange CPD training at the club. Future plans now involve getting more young people to achieve representative honours and getting a more competitive edge into the school teams.

Will Rees, Bedwas RFC Director, shared the club’s enthusiasm for Hughes’ work. He said: “Jon has done a fantastic job at Bedwas High School. His results in terms of participation and development speak for themselves. We are lucky to have Jon involved with Bedwas RFC and we are grateful for the work he does ensuring that there’s a pathway between school and clubs in the area."
