Bedwas had to work hard for this important bonus point win against a team who dug deep and kept playing until the final whistle.
On a dry afternoon with a strong chilly breeze Bedwas kicked off into the wind and took an early lead. The effervescent Ben Eedy crossing after a good move down the middle of what was a narrow pitch. Ben Lewis’s conversion kick was charged down.
Rumney were unable to break down a resolute Bedwas back line and with fourteen minutes elapsed Will Fishlock ran through to cross under the posts, Lewis adding the extras.
Bedwas increased their lead five minutes later as quick hands across the backline teed up Tristan Kugler to dive over the line in the left-hand corner. Ben Lewis successfully converted.
The remainder of the half became an arm wrestle as although Rumney enjoyed a lengthy spell of possession the Bedwas defence was on point even though too many penalties were conceded in this spell which resulted in one penalty too many and Alex Meeson was sinbinned following a team warning.
The remaining fourteen Bedwas players dug deep, and half time arrived with no further scores.
With the wind at their backs for the second half Bedwas wasted little time in increasing their lead as Tristan Kugler ran in from the halfway line to cross for a try. Ben Lewis kicked the conversion
Rumney pulled an unconverted try back by inside centre Morgan Williams before Bedwas increased their lead further after thirteen minutes as Adam Williams ran through to score a try under the posts, Lewis converted.
Bedwas bought on Lewis Crane, Ryan Thomas, Jordan Hole and Lewis Bowden for Ben Eedy, Tom Devine, Alex Meeson and Rhys Peters.
Bedwas pulled further away after twenty-six minutes as Lloyd Jones crashed over for a try converted by Lewis.
Rhys Hutcherson came on for Mike Dacey with ten minutes to play but Bedwas kept up the pressure as Lewis Crane crossed for a try converted by Lewis.
With five minutes to play Rumney reduced the arrears with an interception and sprint in from fifty metres by winger Ollie Chilman converted by Regan Mahoney.
Bedwas had the last say with Lewis Bowden powering through a tiring defence to cross for a try converted with the last kick of the day by Ben Lewis.
At the conclusion of this round of games Bedwas remain top of the table, ahead of Beddau by a single point but there is some daylight to third placed Penallta who lost by a single point to Glamorgan Wanderers.
Next Saturday Bedwas host eighth placed St Peters, kick-off at 2-30pm
