Ynysddu RFC 5 Bedwas RFC 78.
WRU Admiral Championship East, Saturday 12 October 2024.
Match report and photography by Ian Lovell.
Bedwas ran in eleven tries to destroy their opponents in this league fixture. Despite the one-sided scoreline it would be remiss not to give some credit to opponents who are newly promoted to the Championship. At no stage did their heads drop, they played with a good spirit and Bedwas gratefully received a warm welcome which we look forward to reciprocating in the return fixture.
On a mild mid-October afternoon Bedwas were quickly into their stride as scrum half Toby Thomas crossed for his first Bedwas try after only three minutes. Lloyd Wilkins added the conversion.
Wilkins added to the tally after eight minutes courtesy of a penalty goal, but Ynysddu continued to enjoy territory and possession but could not turn the screw into points.
A Lloyd Wilkins try and subsequent conversion increased Bedwas’ advantage after nineteen minutes.
Ynysddu enjoyed a period of sustained possession and territory and were rewarded with a try by left wing Cory Gilfilan out wide. Lewis Millard was unable to add the conversion.
Bedwas continued to attack and five minutes later Tristan Kugler ran in for his sides third try, converted by Lloyd Wilkins.
The game went through a period of tit for tat defending until just before the break and after a period of possession Lewis Bowden burst through a hole in the defence to bring up Bedwas fourth try and, more importantly a bonus point. Wilkins added the extras to put Bedwas 31 points to five ahead at the break.
Bedwas were straight on the front foot at the start of the second half and Rhys Jones crossed for a try improved upon by Wilkins with barely sixty seconds played.
Leo Geraci ran in try number six four minutes later converted by Wilkins.
Debutant Christian Francis crashed through after twelve minutes to bring up the Bedwas half century, but Wilkins’s conversion hit a post and rebounded to safety.
Bedwas continued to be clinical and relentless, and Tristan Kugler added his second try and his teams eighth after fifteen minutes converted by Lloyd Wilkins.
Ynysddu enjoyed some possession, but the Bedwas defence would not be breached.
Full back Llewelyn Brown ran in his first Bedwas try after twenty-eight minutes followed two minutes later by Toby Thomas’s second of the afternoon stretched the lead further. Both tries were converted by Lloyd Wilkins .
With the game in the bag Bedwas defended well to prevent any further scores and with the clock running down Lloyd Wilkins crossed for a try, which brought up Wilkins’ personal tally of one hundred points for the season from only five games played. Congratulations to him.
Next Saturday Bedwas welcome Glamorgan Wanderers to the Bridgefield for what is expected to be another tough test.
