An improved second half earned Bedwas a bonus point win over a battling, well drilled Aberdare side.

Whilst it was a sunny early spring afternoon a strong wind blowing down the ground made it difficult for both sides.

Aberdare had first use of the wind, but it was Bedwas who dominated early possession and territory, but the accuracy of last week’s game was not evident and no points were scored.

Aberdare were first on the scoreboard courtesy of a penalty goal by full back Matthew Davies with eleven minutes played.

Bedwas efforts to get on the board were frustrated by a good defence and mistakes.

After 31 minutes Bedwas were awarded a penalty at a scrum (an element of the game Bedwas dominated) which was successfully kicked by James Hallett. There were no further scores as both defences dominated.

With the wind at their backs for the second half Bedwas broke the deadlock after five minutes as hooker Arwel Hughes was driven over from a line out. James Hallett added the conversion.

A sniping run by Luke Crane saw Bedwas double their advantage with Hallett converting before Aberdare replacement Kian Stephens crossed wide of the posts for an unconverted try.

Bedwas made changes with replacements entering the fray, one of which being Lloyd Jones replacing Owen Jones and making an impact squeezing through the defence for a try converted by Hallett.

With just over half an hour played Aberdare lost replacement prop forward Nathan Terry to the sin bin for a ruck offence. Two minutes later Bedwas took advantage of the additional man as quick hands put James Hallett in for a try which he then added the conversion.

Aberdare were not to be denied as Matthew Davies ran through a static defence to cross for a try improved upon by Cameron Samuel.

Bedwas wrapped things up with a stoppage time try by Adam Williams, James Hallett completing his 100% place kicking record for the day adding the extras.

Next Saturday Bedwas host Treorchy RFC, kick-off 2-30pm.

The Bedwas man of the match was awarded to Jordan Rogers.
