Bedwas moved to the second round of the WRU National Cup after a hard-fought game (which in many ways echoed last week’s game) against Llangennech.
On a warm, sunny early October afternoon Llangennech were first on the scoreboard as they were last week. Last week’s hattrick hero Tommy Williams on the end of a flowing move to cross out wide with six minutes played. Outside half Osian Evans’s conversion went wide.
They doubled their lead after fourteen minutes when hooker Llion Jones was driven over from a lineout. Evans added the conversion.
Bedwas fought to get back into the game and had a try disallowed as the referee adjudged Rhys Morgans did not ground the ball but a minute later a break down the right wing was finished off by Theo McKerrow near the right-hand corner flag. James Dixon was unable to add the extras.
The game was becoming a tough battle as both sides looked for an opening and late in the half it was Bedwas who claimed the try. Rhys Morgans ripping the ball from an opposing players grasp to sprint over fifty metres to touch down under the posts. James Dixon added the extras, and the sides went in for the interval locked at twelve points each.
As last week Bedwas made several changes at the interval and were again rewarded with an early try, this time a first try in Bedwas colours for prop forward Eoin Shackleton. Dixon added the conversion and for the first time Bedwas were ahead in the contest.
No further scores were added until just before sixty minutes had been played with Bedwas increasing their advantage to eight points courtesy of a James Dixon penalty after Llangennech were adjudged offside.
Both sides vied for a further score, Bedwas again denied what could have been a match clinching try when a dominant scrum pushing back the visitors saw the referee penalise Bedwas for standing up in the scrum.
Llangennech did not throw in the towel and put pressure on the Bedwas line leading to a yellow card and ten minutes in the sin bin for James Dixon.
With the clock running down Llangennech pulled a try back through replacement Cai Evans converted by Osian Evans
The visitors sensed an opportunity to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, but fourteen-man Bedwas dug deep to prevent any further scores and eventually were able to kick the ball off the field as the referee blew for full time.
Next week Bedwas head west to the Gnoll, Neath as we return to league action, kick-off is at 2-30pm.
