The long-awaited new season the WRU Community Premiership on Saturday as Bedwas welcome Beddau RFC to the Bridgefield (kick-off 2-30pm).
The observant amongst you will notice the name of Brynley Toms on the team sheet below. We are delighted that Brynley, after considerable persuasion has answered the club’s call to come out of retirement to fill its shortage of loose head prop forwards. Welcome back Brynley.
Ahead of the game Head Coach Pat McGee shared his thoughts on the season ahead:
“After a season that will live long in the history of the club, Bedwas RFC step into a new chapter this Saturday as Premiership rugby returns to The Bridge Field. Last season was one that will be difficult to replicate. Championship winners. Cup winners. A league and cup double. The reward for that outstanding campaign is a place amongst the best clubs in Welsh club rugby.”
“But with success comes a new challenge. The Premiership is a different level, and the standard, intensity and physicality will undoubtedly be raised. There will be no easy games, and every opponent will be looking to test the newly promoted side.”
“For Bedwas, though, this isn’t a time to look back at what has been achieved. It’s about embracing the challenge ahead. The foundations have already been laid. The squad has shown its character, togetherness and ambition over the last 12 months, and those qualities will be needed again as the club takes its place at the top table.”
“There is also a sense of excitement around the group. New challenges bring new opportunities, and Saturday gives the players the chance to show that they belong at this level.”
“The message from the coaching staff will be simple: respect the opposition, respect the Premiership, but don’t fear anyone.
We earned our place here.
Now it’s time to compete.”
He added, “With a big crowd expected at The Bridge Field, the players will be looking to start the Premiership campaign with the same energy, commitment and togetherness that helped deliver last season’s historic double.
A new league. A new challenge. Same club. Same standards.”
