WRU Admiral Championship (East), Wednesday 16th April 2025.
Match report and photography by Ian Lovell.
Bedwas produced one of their best performances of the season where every member of the squad contributed to earn a thoroughly deserved bonus point victory.
From the start Bedwas enjoyed a spell hammering on the Wanderers line with some strong carries from the Bedwas attackers and the defence holding firm by hook or by crook but despite yielding many penalties close to their line the referee chose to keep his cards in his pocket.
Wanderers intercepted one of these attacks and outside centre Amir Walji looked to race away before a superb cover tackle to Tristan Kugler stopped his progress. Dale Rogers came close to scoring for Bedwas but was adjudged to have knocked on whilst grounding the ball.
After a breathless opening ten minutes Bedwas finally got on the scoreboard courtesy of a Luke Crane wide out on the right touchline. Lloyd Wilkins added the tricky kick.
The Wanderers riposte was almost instant as Bedwas were adjudged offside in the centre of the pitch thirty metre from the goal. Outside half Jacob Symes kicking the ensuing penalty.
Bedwas continued to enjoy the lions share of possession and extended their lead with a Lloyd Wilkins try which he was unable to convert.
With the game becoming a wrestle, no further scores were added until Symes kicked a second Wanderers penalty after thirty-three minutes.
Bedwas upped the ante and a came close from break down the middle by Rhys Morgans but shortly afterwards Tristan Kugler evaded would be tacklers before diving under the posts. Wilkins added the extras.
Bedwas were not finished and in time added for injuries Leo Geraci’s break down the left found the supporting Luke Crane to earn Bedwas a four try Bonus point. Wilkins again converted.
In the initial stages of the second half the home side looked to get back into the game but could not find a way past determined Bedwas defenders whilst at the other end a Wanderers clearance kick went straight into Rhys Peters’s hands and after evading two tacklers he crashed over for a try. Wikins converted.
Five minutes later Leo Geraci joined the scorers list as he went over on the left wing, Wilkins added the extras.
Bedwas had opportunities to increase the lead to no avail, likewise Wanderers were unable to trouble the scorers and there were no more scores.
Bedwas’s attention now turns to Saturday’s when Brynmawr RFC visit the Bridgefield for another important game for Bedwas in their quest to win the league title.
