Bedwas maintain winning ways.

Cambrian Welfare RFC 17 Bedwas RFC 26

WRU Admiral Championship East, Saturday 25 January 2025.

Having not been in action since December 21st made this game a potential banana skin for Bedwas but gaining a bonus point win after a tough game is not to be sniffed at.

On a cool, bright afternoon it took a while for both sides to find their rhythm, but it was Bedwas who took the lead after ten minutes, despite the home side having most of the possession and territory from the first whistle. Bedwas’ Leo Geraci found enough space to crash through near the left-hand corner flag to open the scoring. James Hallett on permit from Senghenydd RFC (Thank you!) added the conversion.

Eight minutes later Bedwas doubled their lead. A break through the middle by skipper Dale Rogers put the supporting Jak Robbins in to run in from thirty metres and dot down under the posts. Hallett converted.

Bedwas extended their lead just before the half hour mark as Llewelyn Brown crossed wide on the right-hand side, Hallett was narrowly wide with the conversion.

With the clock running down towards half time Cambrian fullback Ethan Dunning slotted a penalty goal to reduce the arrears.

Bedwas extended their advantage five minutes into the second period. An overthrown Cambrian five metre landed in the hands of Mike Dacey who crashed over the try line for his side’s bonus point try converted by Hallett.

Bedwas rang the changes with the starting props being replaced but it was Cambrian who scored next thanks to a try by left wing Ieaun Chedzoy converted by Dunning.

A yellow card issued to a Cambrian player for an alleged high tackle should have given Bedwas an advantage, but it saw Chedzoy add a second try again converted by Dunning to reduce Bedwas’s advantage to nine points.

It was backs to the wall for Bedwas for the rest of the game, but the defence held out. Dunning had a last kick of the game penalty chance which would have earned his side a losing bonus point but his kick drifted wide.

Next Saturday Bedwas host neighbours Ynysddu, kick off 2-30pm.

Bedwas RFC would like to record our thanks to Nia from our Medical Team and the two Cambrian Welfare supporters who helped our supporter who had a fall on the way out of the ground. He was taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital for treatment and was discharged following gluing of the cut to his chin.
