Bedwas RFC 40 Mountain Ash RFC 10.
WRU Admiral Championship East, Saturday 31st January 2026.
Match report and photography by Ian Lovell.
Bedwas maintained their one hundred percent winning run with a six tries to two tries victory over Mountain Ash at the Bridgefield. However, the margin of victory in no way reflects the efforts put in by the hardworking visitors who should take some plaudits for their efforts.
Considering the heavy rain in the previous twenty-four hours the Bedwas pitch presented no barriers to both teams.
Bedwas gained an early advantage with the fourth minute sin binning of Mount forward Jarrad Parfitt for an off the ball high tackle, but it took Bedwas a further five minutes to take advantage of the numerical advantage. From a penalty kicked deep into the visitors half Bedwas got the scoreboard moving with a catch and drive try, Mike Dacey being awarded the try. James Dixon added the conversion.
Bedwas had further opportunities but did not take them.
With almost half of the allotted time gone good Mount pressure resulted in them scoring a try through Jarrad Parfitt after working the ball across the line. Callum Hall’s conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Mount continued to work hard but indiscipline again proved costly with a second yellow card awarded after twenty-seven minutes. This time Bedwas responded almost immediately as good passing put Rhys Peters in for a try, improved upon by Dixon.
No further scores came until late in the half as Jacob Lee crashed through the home defence for a try. James Dixon missed the conversion kick, but it saw Bedwas going in at half time with a nineteen points to five lead.
Bedwas made changes for the start of the second half with both starting props and Will Fishlock being replaced.
It was, however, the visitors who scored first with a try from Teri Gee who exploited the space on the Bedwas right to cross for an unconverted try.
Mount continued to make life hard for Bedwas, and it was not until the twenty seventh minute that Bedwas could cross to earn the bonus point earning fourth try. However, this was not without controversy as the visitors were adamant that Tristan Kugler had a foot in touch in the build-up. After a lengthy discussion between the Bedwas touch judge and referee Dai Cambourne and then the referee and the two captains the referee awarded the try. Dixon added the conversion from close to the touchline.
Further drama followed shortly afterwards with the referee going down injured requiring lengthy treatment by the Bedwas physio before he could resume.
Bedwas reacted better from the break in proceedings as two Aaron Billingham tries in a five-minute spell both converted by James Dixon gave the scoreline a flattering look for Bedwas.
Next week Bedwas travel to Treorchy for what is expected to be a very tough game. Kick off at the Treorchy Oval is 1-00pm.
