Bedwas RFC 57 Ynysddu RFC 0.
WRU Admiral Championship East, Saturday 1st February 2025.
Match report and photography by Ian Lovell.
Bedwas celebrated their return to home fixtures by overwhelming Ynysddu, but it would be remiss to not give the visitors credit for not throwing in the towel.
On a cool, overcast January Bedwas were quickly onto the front foot taking the lead after four minutes. A close-range line out was driven on and hooker Mike Dacey was last off the floor to claim the try. Captain for the day Lloyd Wilkins added the conversion.
Bedwas doubled their lead four minutes later as the ball was quickly shipped across the field for Leo Geraci to beat his marker and cross in the corner; Wilkins again converted.
Bedwas continued to dominate but attacks were halted by knock-ons and the referee adjudicating Bedwas ‘pop’ passes were forward. Ynysddu also squandered a few opportunities due to knock-ons.
Bedwas increased their lead with three minutes of the half to play. Adam Williams received the ball some forty metres away from the line but as is his trademark he brushed aside would be tacklers to cross in the corner. Lloyd Wilkins’ conversion kick missed the target.
Bedwas increased their lead eight minutes into the second half. Mike Dacey bagging his second completed with a forward roll to cross in the corner. Wilkins’ conversion went wide.
The bonus point in the bag saw Bedwas try too hard to increase the scores but the last eleven minutes saw Ynysddu begin to tire and Bedwas took full advantage.
Adam Williams added his second try of the afternoon with eleven minutes to play, Wilkins converted.
Ben Eedy’s try three minutes later as he ran through from deep brushing off defenders increased the home advantage. Lloyd Wilkins added the conversion.
With five minutes to play Bedwas crossed again as Christian Francis powered over for a try converted by Wilkins.
With time running out replacement Tristan Kugler’s arcing run took him past would be defenders for try number eight which was unconverted.
Bedwas were not finished. With the last play of the game Harry Oliver made a break down the middle running for fifty metres with a great sidestep to see off a defender before passing to the supporting Lloyd Wilkins for a try he converted.
Bedwas are back in action this Friday night (7the February) with a rearranged game at Treorchy, kick-off 7-30pm.
Bedwas RFC would like to thank W2 Window Systems for their generous sponsorship of this game, we hope they enjoyed their afternoon.
