Having been postponed twice due to the recent flooding it was no real surprise that the elements dominated this game. Played throughout a strong wind, accompanied at times with torrential rain it is credit to both sides that they fought out a tough battle.
The visitors had first use of the strong wind as they attacked the club house end. Outside half Jack Evans took advantage of a Bedwas indiscretion at a ruck to notch a penalty goal with two minutes on the clock. The same player had an opportunity to increase his side’s lead a few minutes later after Bedwas were penalised for holding on a ruck. Unfortunately for him his kick from the half way line fell short.
With the strong wind making life difficult for both sides scoring opportunities were at a premium. However Bedwas made the most of one opportunity as James Richards found the space to dive over wide on the wing. Hallett’s conversion attempt was held up by the wind and unsuccessful.
Neither side could conjure up scoring opportunities and though both showed plenty of energy no further scores came in the half.
Conditions worsened in the second half as the heavens opened making life extremely difficult on the field.
Trebanos kept possession for lengthy periods but the Bedwas defence was not for breeching. At the other end Bedwas worked their way up field courtesy of a couple of penalty kicks to touch and gained their reward with a catch and drive maul resulting in Aled Evans touching down. James Hallett’s conversion drifted across the face of the posts.
For the remaining twenty five minutes both sides worked hard to create openings but to no avail as the elements dominated.
It was a relief to all that the final whistle came as everyone sought refuge in the safety of the clubhouse.
Bedwas are next in action on Saturday 21 March 2020 when they travel to Ystrad Rhondda RFC, kick-off at 2-30pm.
