Whilst the score line may show that Bedwas were well beaten by Premiership Newport in their first run out of the new season Bedwas management, players and supporters can take heart from the physical effort put in by a young side.
After two early tries from Newport Bedwas hit back. A driving maul saw the Bedwas pack gain some territory before spinning the ball out via several pairs of hands to centre Jack Guy to force his was through for a try converted by Sam Davies. Bedwas fought hard against a physically larger side restricting Newport to tries midway through the half and just before the interval to see them lead 26-7 at the break.
Newport made wholesale replacements at the start of the half and despite Bedwas’ efforts ran in six tries at regular intervals, opting not to take conversion kicks towards the end of the game as Bedwas began to tire. A late yellow card for a tackle in the air saw Bedwas reduced to fourteen men but it was late in the game and only one more try was conceded before the final whistle.
